Why Exercise At Home?
Over the last decade, the number of commercial, member-subscription gyms and Health Club chains has increased many-fold. It is rare to find a town or city - even a village these days, which does not have several of the big-name companies competing for members.Conversely, along with this rise, more and more people are electing to exercise at home. There are many reasons for this: -
Cost.
It is much cheaper to exercise at home. Most gyms tie clients into membership for periods of up to 12 months at a time, and take the fees from your account whether you go or not.
Insecurity.
Many people, especially women, are intimidated by the thought of large, mixed-sex gyms, as they feel self- conscious about their body shape.
Time.
Joining a gym is one thing. Getting there is another. With the best will in the world, by the time you've finished work, the last thing you want is to trek to the gym.
Overcrowding.
At peak times, many gyms are very busy indeed, entailing waiting for machines to become available, and the frustration of not being able to get into too-full classes.
If This Sounds All -Too Familiar, You Need To Consider Exercising At Home!
With just a small amount of home exercise equipment, all the weight-loss and fat-burning advantages of going to the gym can be yours - in the privacy and comfort of your own home, at times that suit YOU, and at a FRACTION of the yearly cost of a gym membership!
The aim of this site is to de-mystify the home exercise equipment market and help you decide what is right for YOU, your home and your budget.
I am a Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor with many years experience of the home exercise market.
Most of my clients prefer to exercise in their own homes, so I have helped them choose the right equipment for them - whether a treadmill, cross-trainer, exercise bike or full home gym.
Their results have been spectacular! Without exception, they have lost pounds and pounds of unsightly fat, toned and strengthened their arms, legs, stomachs and butts and dropped several clothes sizes!
They look great and feel fantastic - and so can you!
So, What Is The Best Home Exercise Equipment For You?This will depend on your budget, the space you have available, and your own preferences. Here is a brief rundown of home exercise equipment available:
Treadmills
These are immensely popular and versatile; you walk or run on a cushioned moving belt. There are handgrips for safety. Models vary from a manual treadmill at around $200 up to powered, variable speed, incline and program models at $2500+.
Ellipticals
These are low-impact and easy on your joints. You stand and push the pedals round with your feet, while pulling/pushing on the handgrips; a very effective full-body workout. Cost varies from $200 to $1500.
Ellipticals take up less space than a treadmill and are easier to move.
Exercise Cycles
These have never gone out of fashion, and are perennially popular! Give a good non-impact leg and butt workout and are usually smaller and less costly than treadmills and ellipticals. Reclining exercise cycles are more expensive but give good back support - perfect for people with back problems or recovering from injury.
Rowing Machines
Often overlooked in the home exercise market, rowing machines look ungainly but give the best full-body calorie burning workout. A sliding seat moves along a rail as you push with the legs and pull with the arms.
Rowers are among the fittest people in the world! However, rowing can be quite challenging for the exercise novice and care must be taken with posture. Cost varies from $100 to $2500. Low impact.
Multigyms
These can vary from a bench with a weight stack attached, to a full multigym which allows you to work all your major muscle groups in turn, with various pulling/pushing exercises. The weights can be easily altered, making multigyms ideal for both men and women. Excellent, detailed instructions come with most models, making multigyms good for both the novice and more experienced exerciser.
Multigyms give a complete full-body workout with almost limitless variations, but they do take up quite a lot of space! Costs vary greatly from $150 up to $5000+ for the serious exerciser.
Pilates and Yoga
These exercise disciplines concentrate on your core muscles in your stomach, back and butt and strengthen you from the inside out! Little equipment is needed apart from a mat, although foam blocks and flexible bands are both variable and useful for many exercises.
Pilates and Yoga concentrate on the quality of moves, rather than the intensity, and must be practised carefully and safely using a good book or DVD, or attending classes. Pilates and Yoga will lengthen, strengthen and tone your muscles to give you a strong core and a shapely outline, although calorie-burning is lower than other exercise types.
